18 September 2019, Gaydon, UK: One of the UK’s most exciting artists, Robi Walters has taken up the role of Artist-in-Residence at Aston Martin. Over the next 12 months, Walters will create unique works of art during a defining period for the Aston Martin brand as its new UK manufacturing facility goes into full production at St Athan in Wales, producing the company’s first SUV, the Aston Martin DBX.
London based artist, Walters is best known for his mesmerising and colourful collages that utilise discarded objects, transforming discarded objects into beautiful pieces of art. Walters constantly works beyond his comfort zone, pushing boundaries to inspire others to do the same. The artists’ early childhood life was very traumatic and disruptive and tells a heartfelt story of being moved around children’s homes and being separated from his family. Through his practice of art and meditation, Walters has found a more harmonious way to live, create and inspire others that anything is possible.
During his Aston Martin residency he will create innovative and provocative artwork from materials recycled from Aston Martin’s three production sites at Gaydon, St Athan and Newport Pagnell. He will also be collaborating on special projects with Aston Martin’s Vice President and Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman.
Commenting on the new residency, Walters said: “I have been a car lover ever since I was a child. For me, Aston Martin has always been iconic and the pinnacle of automotive design - they make beautiful cars, which are themselves incredible works of art and now after visiting the factory, and meeting some of the team, I am incredibly inspired by the spirit of Aston Martin. I am so thrilled and excited about this partnership. To work closely with Marek Reichman developing creative projects and making pieces of art from materials that don’t make it into the iconic sports cars will push me into new areas as an artist and I just can’t wait."
Walters many collectors include esteemed celebrities, from actors Thandie Newton and Stellan Skarsgård, to sports stars such as Usain Bolt and West Ham’s captain Mark Noble. He has also created work with many musicians including U2, Mary J Blige, and Sir Paul McCartney raising money for charities. His work recently caught the eye of Michelin starred chef, Tom Kerridge, who commissioned Walters to produce a series of art for his new restaurant, Kerridge’s Bar & Grill in the Corinthia Hotel, London. This has led to other exciting ventures between them.
